I was the healthy one. That is the joke of it. Forty-two, ran most mornings, ate the right things, the guy who nagged his friends about their cholesterol. I trained a full year for that marathon. And at mile twenty, on a bright ordinary Sunday, my heart simply stopped, and I went down on the pavement in front of a hundred strangers.
They tell me a cardiologist happened to be running twenty feet behind me. They tell me a race volunteer had a defibrillator on a cart within reach. I believe in luck less than I used to and in something else more, because that is a lot of the right people in the right place at the right yard of a very long road.
From the inside, it was like this. One second I was counting my breathing, thinking about the finish, and the next the road tilted up and went dark, not like fainting, more like a door closing behind me very fast. And then I was somewhere with no pavement and no pain and no burning in my legs, and I was moving forward through a dark that curved, toward a light that was small and then not small, and it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen or will see. I have run beside the ocean at dawn. It was nothing next to this.
As I went, my life came up around me. Not a slideshow. It was fuller than that, like walking back through my own days and standing inside them. I was eight and afraid of a thunderstorm and my father sat on the edge of my bed until it passed, and I felt his patience, felt how much he loved me, more than he ever managed to say out loud in life. I was twenty-five and I had said something unforgivable to my brother, and I felt his hurt land in him and stay there for years, and I understood at last why he had gone quiet with me. I was thirty and my son gripped my finger and I felt, from his side, how safe I made him feel, and I had never known.
