The Fifth Man On A Four-Man Observation Post
Four soldiers snowed in on a mountain outpost survived six days on short rations and one broken ankle. Every count afterwards came out to five.
I Dreamed The Same Canal For Thirty Years
A woman dreams of trainers left on a canal bank for three decades, until one summer evening the dream finally arrives in daylight.
She Ghosted Me For Eleven Months, Then Apologised About The Car
A woman cut all contact for eleven months. She reappeared beside a drained swimming pool at four in the morning, apologising about a car.
Ecologists Watched A Silent Craft During Night Wildlife Survey
Three ecologists on a night bat survey watched a soundless object cross the moor. Their instruments recorded eleven minutes of complete silence.
The Pencil Marks Behind My Door Kept Getting Taller
The math said I couldn't afford to move, so I stayed and ran experiments instead: flour on the floor, thread on the latch, a cheap camera on the doorframe. My landlord never once came in while I was out. The marks measuring my height went up anyway.
Somebody Built Cairns on the Wrong Ridge, and I Followed Them
I chart for a living: times, facts, what I did about it. So here is my chart of four days alone in the Winds - the stacked stones that were on nobody's map, the thing that said my name at a normal indoor volume from four feet away, and how I walked out.
Our Farmhouse Swallows Sound, and We Taped Out Where
We bought a 1911 Michigan farmhouse and I renovated it with a spreadsheet in one hand. Then rooms started eating sound mid-sentence. I mapped the dead spots with painter's tape and a borrowed decibel meter, and the map drew a floor plan that isn't ours.
She Was Standing at Mile Marker 212 in Three Different States
Twenty years long-haul, and I never pick anybody up. But the same woman kept standing at mile marker 212 - Oklahoma, Nebraska, Wyoming - same coat, same distance off the shoulder, and one night the CB answered a question I hadn't keyed yet.
There Were Three Doors on C Wing. In January I Counted Four
I did nights at a dead county hospital for $14.75 an hour, punching a clock station by station while they stripped it for demolition. The floor plan says three doors between stations 14 and 15. Some nights my punch tape says otherwise, and I never opened the fourth.
I Count Things for a Living, and One Night Won't Balance
Pharmacy tech, sixteen years. My car died on US-97 at 9:40 on a clear November night, and twenty-some minutes stopped agreeing with every clock I own. I don't remember a thing. What I got instead is worse: I know my way around a room I've never been in.
We Logged Them as Weather, and I Typed the Entry Myself
Twenty-one years Navy, radar. One midwatch our scopes tracked returns dropping forty thousand feet in a sweep, three consoles agreeing with each other and with nothing else on earth. The order came down to reclassify them as weather, and I was the one who typed it.
The Same Man Asked Me for Directions Twice, Word for Word
I work a parts counter in a small Maine town. A man came in asking directions. Two nights later he asked again: same words, same pauses, same wrong way of standing. The store camera saw all of it, and the DVR overwrote itself before I showed one single person.
Three Nights the Whole Feedyard Looked at the Same Corner
I've ridden pens at a Texas Panhandle feedyard for thirty years. I know every light a night can make. On three nights in October 2016, forty thousand head of cattle went silent and faced the east pens, and what hung there wasn't any of them.
The Elevator Logged an Hour I Never Worked
Thirty years running a Nebraska grain elevator, third shift. Then the power started sagging for four minutes at a time, my punch card came back stamped with an hour I don't remember, and my own signature turned up on a log I never signed.
The Host's Reviews Were All Written After Checkout — By Me
Every glowing review on the listing was 'verified guest.' After my stay I found my own name on a five-star review I never wrote, dated before I arrived — and so, I realised, were all the others.
The Wind-Up Radio Broadcasts Yesterday
A charity-shop wind-up radio only receives one thing: news bulletins from the day before. I laughed it off until it reported, yesterday-dated, an accident on my road — and I kept my son home from the school run.
The Poltergeist Packed Our Bags
For months something in our flat threw things and slammed doors — until the week we decided, in private, to move out. Then it changed: it started, gently and unmistakably, helping us pack.
The Sibling I Invented as a Child Was Real
As a girl I had an 'imaginary' older sister I described in detail — name, freckles, a scar. My mother forbade the game. A DNA test at forty found her: a real half-sister, adopted out before I was born, matching my description.
The Toll Ticket From a Bridge That Fell
Night shift on a modern motorway toll. A car paid with an old paper ticket from the original bridge — the one that collapsed, with cars on it, the year I was born. The driver thanked me by a name I've never used.
