JURY OF 131 READERS HEARD THIS CASE: 114 believed it, 5 had doubts, 12 weren't buying it.

Twenty years on nights and I have a rule: the ward is never empty of sound, so you learn which sounds mean something. A call bell means something. It is the one sound you cannot ignore, by training and by law.

Bed 12 in bay C was discharged on the Monday afternoon — a lovely old man, home to his daughter's, mattress stripped, curtains open, the bay running four patients instead of five for the week. That night at 3:40 the call bell for bed 12 rang at the nurses' station.

I went. Empty bed, stripped, the call unit clipped to the bare rail where I'd left it. I reset it, assumed a fault, logged it. 3:40 the next night: bed 12 again. And the next. All week, 3:40 give or take a minute, the empty bed calling.

Biomed came and swapped the unit, then swapped the wiring at the head of the bed, then ran a diagnostic that found nothing and, in the engineer's words, 'shouldn't be able to trigger from an unoccupied point anyway — the button's physically on a cable in the drawer.' The button was in the drawer. I put it there myself. It cannot be pressed in a drawer.

THIS EXCERPT ENDS HERE. The remaining 142 words of the testimony — and the reader jury — are on file at:
