I run overnight security for a mid-size office complex, twelve floors, forty-one cameras. Camera six is the problem, and it has been the problem quietly, on my shifts, for two years.

The 2019 refit knocked through the old sixth-floor east corridor — turned three narrow hallways into one open-plan floor. I have the drawings; I walk that floor nightly. It is open plan. There is no corridor.

Camera six disagrees, but only sometimes, and only late. Most of the night it shows what everyone else's monitor shows: desks, plants, the exit sign. But between roughly two and four, perhaps one shift in five, the feed changes — not glitches, changes — to the old corridor. Narrow. Yellowish lights we replaced with LEDs. A carpet pattern I recognized from the before-photos in the building's lobby history display.

The first dozen times I assumed a looping archived feed, some ghost file in the DVR. Our IT contractor spent a night with me, disproved it thoroughly — the timestamp is live, the clock in the corner matches my watch to the second, and when I wave a torch across the real open-plan floor, a faint light crosses the CORRIDOR image at the same moment, in roughly the right place, as if both spaces occupy the same coordinates and the camera can't decide which year to believe.
