Cancel the Sitter

Our anniversary dinner had been booked for a month: the good restaurant, the babysitter our daughter adores, the taxi ordered. I was zipping my dress when the dread arrived.

I want to describe it precisely, because 'a bad feeling' undersells the physics of it. It was weather. A pressure change in the room. My chest tightened around a single wordless insistence — do not leave the house tonight — and it did not attach to any image: not the taxi, not the restaurant, not the sitter, nothing to argue with. Just a wall where the evening used to be.

My husband was patient the way you are with a spooked partner: we will lose the deposit, Ellie will be disappointed she can't play with Mia's hair, are you sure? I was leaking tears by then, which frightened both of us — I am not a crier — and that settled it. He rang and cancelled everything while I sat on the stairs in my dress feeling the wall go transparent, then thin, then gone. By eight I felt fine and extremely stupid. We ordered takeaway.
