I worked at the feed mill in a town small enough that if you sneezed at the gas station, somebody’s aunt would ask about your allergies by supper.

It was the week before the county fair, which meant we were slammed. Everybody needed chicken feed, cracked corn, salt blocks, straw bales, and last-minute “just one more bag” of whatever. I was twenty-three, very proud of being able to back a trailer into a narrow bay, and generally too impressed with myself.

The night before, I’d been at the fairgrounds helping set up pens. Afterward, a few of us sat on the tailgate of a flatbed and passed around plastic cups from an unmarked jug someone’s cousin brought. It tasted like apples and bad decisions. I got home late, slept four hours, and came into work feeling like my bones were buzzing.

By lunch, I should’ve gone home. Instead, I ate a gas station sandwich, drank from a thermos I had stupidly topped off with more of that apple stuff, and told myself I was “leveling out.” That is embarrassing to admit, but there it is.

We had a new part-time guy that summer, just out of school. He was careful in a way I thought was hilarious. Safety glasses on his face even to sweep. Vest zipped. Clipboard in hand. He’d ask if the auger was locked out before stepping near a bin.

At about two, he reminded me to clip into the harness before checking the cracked corn bin.

I actually laughed.

“Relax,” I said. “It’s corn, not quicksand.”

He didn’t laugh. He just looked at me and said, “Grain moves.”

That made me laugh harder. I did a little fake wobble like I was being sucked under, which I thought was comedy gold. A farmer waiting for mineral tubs chuckled, and that made me worse. I pointed at the new guy’s bright vest and said, “If I disappear, just follow the glow.”

Instant karma must have been standing right behind me with a stopwatch.

A truck was coming for a mixed order, and I rushed everything because I wanted to look fast. I opened the wrong gate, cursed, grabbed my clipboard, dropped it, bent down, and my phone slid right out of my shirt pocket. It hit the rim, bounced once, and vanished into the cracked corn.

My whole life was in that phone. More importantly, I had a string of dumb messages on it from the night before, and I didn’t want the boss finding it after the bin emptied. I looked around. The new guy had gone to get twine. The farmer was outside smoking by his truck.

I climbed in.

No harness. No lockout tag. Still half-drunk, sweating apple fumes, and thinking only about saving a phone that was already probably ruined.

At first it was nothing. The corn was maybe knee-deep around me, warm and dusty, smelling like sweet dirt. I shuffled with my boots, saw the corner of my phone case, and leaned for it.

Then the auger started.

It was a low growl under my feet. The corn shifted like somebody pulled a rug from below. My boots sank instantly. I tried to step back, but there was no back. The cracked corn moved around my legs like wet sand, only faster.

I yelled. Not a brave yell. Not even words. Just a panicked barn animal noise.

By the time the new guy got to the ladder, I was buried to my thighs and sinking. I remember his face going completely white. He didn’t climb in after me, which is exactly what I would’ve done and exactly what would’ve gotten us both killed. He ran to the shutoff.
