My Boss Fired Me by Text on a Friday, Then Begged on Monday

I worked at a small company where I quietly handled a lot more than my job title suggested. Over three years I had become the only person who understood the aging payroll and scheduling system, an ugly old thing held together by scripts I had written myself.

My manager did not like me. I was too quiet, asked too many questions in meetings, and, worst of all, I had once been right about something in front of his boss. One Friday at five o'clock, as I was leaving, my phone buzzed. A text. From him. It informed me that my position was "no longer a fit" and that I "did not need to come in Monday." That was it. Three years, ended by text, at the door, so he would not have to say it to my face.

I did not argue. I did not beg. I texted back a single word: "Understood." I went home. I did not touch anything. I did not sabotage a single file, because I did not have to. I simply stopped being there, which was the one thing that made the whole place run.
