My grandmother raised me. When she died, I took it hard, and I stayed at her house the week after the funeral to sort through her things, sleeping in the spare room, surrounded by the smell of her.

Her phone had been disconnected. I had cancelled the line myself, days before, on hold with the company, crying quietly while a polite man read me the closure confirmation. The number was dead. I want to be clear about that, because of what happened next.

The night after the funeral, near midnight, my cell phone rang. I picked it up half asleep and the screen said her name, the contact I had never had the heart to delete, calling from her old number. I sat up fully awake and answered it, saying hello, saying her name, my heart going hard.

For a few seconds there was no voice, but there was sound. There was her kitchen radio, the little one she kept on the windowsill, playing the low murmur of the station she always left it on. There was the specific creak of her chair, the one by the window, the sound it made when she settled into it, a sound I would know anywhere. It was the sound of her kitchen, at night, exactly as it had been my whole childhood.
