My Sister and I Dial Each Other at Once

If you have ever tried to call someone at the precise instant they were calling you, you know the little glitch it makes. No ringing. Just a click and suddenly you are both there, laughing about it. For most people that happens once in a lifetime. For my twin sister Nadia and me, it happens so often it has stopped being a coincidence and started being a way of life.

We are identical, and we have done this since we were teenagers with our first phones. One of us gets the urge to call, and the other one is already dialing, and the line connects with no ring at all, and we both say hello into a call neither of us heard ring. Our family used to find it hilarious. Now they just roll their eyes when it happens at the dinner table, both our phones lighting up as we reach for them at the same moment.

I used to think it was a habit thing, that we simply tended to think of each other at predictable times, after work, on a Sunday morning. But it happens at odd hours too, three in the afternoon on a random Tuesday, or the middle of the night, both of us awake for no reason and reaching for the phone in the same breath.

The day it mattered was a Thursday last June. I woke at 4 in the morning with a jolt, wide awake, my heart going, filled with the pure need to talk to Nadia right now. I did not question it. By the time I had my phone in my hand and my thumb moving, it was already connecting, no ring, and there she was, breathing fast on the other end. We had both sat bolt upright and dialed in the same instant, in the dark, two towns apart.

She was in early labor. Three weeks early, alone, her partner away for work and not answering. She had woken up frightened and her first instinct, before calling anyone else, before even calling the hospital, was to call me. And I had woken up at the same second, pulled out of sleep by something I could not name, already dialing her.
