The neurologists did not believe me at first. I understand why. What I was describing sounded like the kind of thing people want to be true. But I lived it for six years, and I am telling you exactly what happened, and you can decide for yourself.

I have epilepsy. It started in my twenties after a car accident, the kind where the seizures do not follow a neat schedule and no medication ever fully controls them. For years I lived in a low hum of fear, because the worst part of a seizure is not the seizure. It is the not knowing when. You cannot drive comfortably. You do not take baths. You are afraid of stairs, of stoves, of being alone. You are afraid all the time in a background way that wears a groove in you.

Then I adopted Duke.

He was a black and tan mutt at the county shelter, maybe two years old, part shepherd and part something with short legs, so he looked like a regular dog that had been slightly compressed. I picked him because he was quiet and he leaned on me when I knelt to say hello. I was not looking for a service animal. I could not afford one and did not qualify for the programs. I just wanted a dog.

The first time he did it, we had been together about three weeks. I was washing dishes and Duke came over and pressed his whole body against my shins, hard, and sat down on my feet. I told him to move. He would not. He looked up at me and whined, this low serious sound. I got annoyed, then I got dizzy, then I was on the kitchen floor coming out of a seizure with Duke lying across my chest, having apparently kept me from cracking my head on the counter on the way down.

I thought it was luck. Then it happened again. And again. And a pattern took shape that I could set a clock by. Roughly ten minutes before a seizure, Duke would find me wherever I was and press against me and refuse to leave. If I sat down, he lay on me. If I ignored him, he escalated, barking, pawing, once actually grabbing my sleeve and pulling. He was never wrong. Not once in six years. He alerted me to seizures in the shower, in the garden, in the car once, which gave me time to pull over and get out. He caught seizures at three in the morning by climbing onto the bed and lying on my chest until I woke up and understood.
