The 911 Call I Took That Was Not On The Recording

Dispatch is a job of paperwork with adrenaline stapled to it. Every call is recorded. Every keystroke is timestamped. This is the whole architecture of the job: you cannot lose anything, because losing something ends careers.

At 03:12 on a Tuesday in March I took a call from a woman who said, without any preamble, "They are taking the dog first."

Not screaming. Calm the way people are calm when they have already decided that nothing they say will help. I asked for her location. She gave a road that exists — a farm road out past the reservoir — and then said the dog's name, which was Chess, and then she said, "You will not find the house."

I asked her to stay on the line. There was a click, and then a tone, and the tone was not a dial tone. It was a single note, like a struck glass, and it went on for what my body remembers as maybe six seconds.
