JURY OF 59 READERS HEARD THIS CASE: 35 believed it, 10 had doubts, 14 weren't buying it.

The overnight bus from Halberg to the coast had to cross one land border in the small hours, and the driver had made it very clear at the start, in three languages, that at the crossing everyone gets off, takes their own passport through the booth, and gets back on quickly, because he had a schedule and he would not wait for stragglers. I took him at his word. I should have taken him more seriously.

We pulled into the border post at something like two in the morning, a cluster of floodlit huts in the middle of nowhere with moths swarming the lights and a cold wind off the fields. Forty of us shuffled off the warm bus into a queue for a single window. The officer inside was in no hurry. He examined each passport like a man reading a novel he did not enjoy, tapping keys, staring, stamping, waving the next person forward at the pace of a dying clock.

I was near the back. I watched the front of the line get processed and climb back onto the bus, one by one, and I watched the bus engine start, a low diesel rumble, exhaust ghosting red in the tail lights. I was maybe six people from the window. Then five. The officer took my neighbour passport and, instead of stamping it, picked up a phone and had a long, unbothered conversation with someone while she and I stood there, and I watched over my shoulder as the last few passengers boarded and the doors folded shut.

I did the thing where you try to be in two places. I stepped out of the line toward the bus, waving, and the officer barked at me to come back, because he now had my passport open in his hand and I could not exactly leave without it. So I was trapped. He had my document. The bus had my backpack in its hold, with my clothes and, crucially, three days of medication I take on a schedule I cannot skip. And the driver, true to his cruel promise, released the brakes with a hiss and pulled out of the compound while I stood pinned in a booth screaming at glass.
