The Bride Who Uninvited Me, Then Needed My Barn

My cousin was planning an enormous wedding, and somewhere in the stress she turned into a person none of us recognized. Two months before the date she sent me a message, meant to sound gracious, informing me that she had to "make some hard cuts to the guest list" and that I "understood, being single, that couples had to come first." I was uninvited to save one seat.

It stung. We had grown up together. But I said congratulations, meant it as much as I could, and stepped back.

Three weeks before the wedding, disaster. Her expensive venue double-booked and cancelled on her. Every hall for a hundred miles was full for that Saturday in June. She was going to have to postpone, lose deposits, tell two hundred guests.

There was exactly one option in the whole family. My property, which happens to include a large, beautifully restored barn that I rent out for events, the very thing I do for a living, and which she knew about perfectly well, because she had once called it "cute, but not really my style."
