The Counting Man in the Ceiling

The first time my son mentioned the counting man, we were making pancakes and he said it the way children hand you tickets they don't know are grenades: 'The man in the ceiling counted us again last night. Four.' We had a giggle about it — kids invent everything — and I made a mental note that our family is three.

Over months, the counting man acquired rules through my son's occasional bulletins. He doesn't come down. He isn't sad or happy, he just counts. He counts when everyone's asleep, which raised the reasonable question of how my son knew, to which he said the obvious thing: 'He counts me first, so I'm awake for it.'

We treated it as charming right up until the bulletin that emptied my lungs. My son, five by then, over cereal: 'The man counted three last night. He's wrong. There's still four.' I asked, carefully, what he meant by still. And my son looked at me with what I can only call condolence and said, 'Because of the baby that stopped.'
