Every family has a signature dish; ours was a spiced walnut cake that my grandmother made, her mother made, and that I make now, from a recipe card so old the ink is more suggestion than fact. The family lore was that it came from our aristocratic-ish ancestors 'in the old country,' a story told with more pride than evidence.

I got into genealogy through the cake, oddly — wanting to trace the recipe's origin, I started tracing the family, and took a DNA test to fill in the branches. The results introduced a wrinkle the family tree couldn't absorb: a substantial cluster of matches to a surname that appeared nowhere in our proud lineage, tied to a modest family of domestic servants from entirely the wrong social stratum for our self-image.

The paper trail, once I stopped resisting it, was clear and quietly heartbreaking. My great-great-grandfather, the patriarch of the 'aristocratic-ish' line, had fathered a child with the household's housekeeper — a young woman whose name appears in exactly one census, as 'servant,' and then vanishes from every record the family kept, scrubbed from the story so thoroughly that her own descendant needed a spit tube to find her a century later. The child was raised in the big house under a fiction, and that child was my direct ancestor. Half of my supposedly grand genome came from a woman the family had erased so completely that we'd forgotten we were mostly her.
