JURY OF 243 READERS HEARD THIS CASE: 176 believed it, 39 had doubts, 28 weren't buying it.

I run the desk alone from eleven to seven at a highway hotel that is maybe a third full most weeknights. The lobby is quiet, the elevator dings to itself, and I get a lot of reading done.

The first night, the phone from Room 412 lit up at 3:14. I answered and heard breathing, then a soft voice asking for extra towels. I said I would send some up, then remembered the housekeeping staff were long gone. I checked the system. Room 412 was vacant. It had been vacant for eight days.

The second night, 3:14 again. The same voice, a woman, asking this time whether her husband had checked in yet. I told her there was no reservation under the room. She said, very calmly, that he was always late, and hung up.

By the third night I was ready. I walked up to the fourth floor before three and stood outside 412 with the master key. The hallway was cold in a way the rest of the building was not, cold enough that I could see my own breath under the exit sign. At 3:14 exactly I heard the phone inside the empty room begin to ring, and ring, and ring.

THIS EXCERPT ENDS HERE. The remaining 81 words of the testimony — and the reader jury — are on file at:
