I worked nights as an aide on a quiet ward. Overnight the ward was still, most patients asleep, and my job was rounds, walking the hall every hour, checking on rooms, listening at doors.
Room 4 was closed. It had been closed for months for renovation, cleared out completely, no bed, no equipment, nothing but bare floor and a stripped frame where a bed used to be, the door usually kept shut. Nobody was in room 4. Nobody could be.
One night, passing it, I heard talking inside. A low voice, murmuring, the unmistakable cadence of someone speaking. I stopped. I thought maybe a patient had wandered in, or a colleague was in there, though there was no reason for either. I opened the door and turned on the light. The room was empty. Bare floor, bare walls, no bed, no person, nothing. And the talking had stopped the instant the door opened.
I stood there feeling foolish and cold, and as I reached to switch off the light and pull the door shut, the voice came again, close, clear, right beside me in the empty room, and it said, gently, "Thank you for coming to check on me." A man's voice, warm, tired, grateful. There was no one there. I left that light on and I did not close that door and I walked back to the desk faster than I want to admit.
