JURY OF 160 READERS HEARD THIS CASE: 93 believed it, 21 had doubts, 46 weren't buying it.

The war between me and Frank Delucci did not start with the leaf blower. That is important. The leaf blower was an escalation, a nuclear option deployed in a conflict that had been simmering, in the cold suburban way, for the better part of a year before he ever pulled that cord.

It started, as these things do, with something stupid. My leaves blew onto his lawn in the fall. Everyone's leaves blow everywhere in the fall -- that is what leaves and wind are for -- but Frank took it personally, the way Frank took everything personally, and he raked them back onto my side in a neat accusing pile at the property line, and instead of being the bigger man I raked them back, and that, I am fairly sure, was the shot heard round the cul-de-sac.

From there it was a year of small hostilities. He parked his boat trailer an inch onto the shared edge of my driveway. I put my trash cans a little too close to his mailbox. He trimmed his hedge into a shape that shed clippings my way. We stopped waving. We entered that specific state of suburban cold war where two men who live forty feet apart communicate entirely through passive-aggressive landscaping.

The leaf blower arrived in spring, which is the tell. Nobody needs a commercial-grade backpack leaf blower in spring. There are no leaves in spring. Frank bought it, I am convinced, purely as an instrument of war, and he debuted it at 6:30 on a Saturday morning directly outside my bedroom window, blowing a driveway that had nothing on it, back and forth, for forty-five minutes, a machine loud enough to be measured in units usually reserved for aircraft.

I want to tell you I responded with grace. I did not. I responded with a wet-dry vacuum I ran on Sunday mornings against our shared wall. He responded with earlier leaf blowing. I responded by mowing at dinnertime. We were two middle-aged men conducting an orchestra of spite, and the whole street had front-row seats and, I later learned, a group chat placing bets on how it would end.
