Our outpost sat in a wide valley, the kind of place where the dark comes down complete and the stars are so thick they look fake. I pulled a lot of night watch there, up in the observation post, scanning a landscape that was mostly nothing, and it was on those long quiet shifts that I first noticed the light.

It appeared on a far hill to the east, maybe a couple of kilometers out, well past anything that should have had power. A single steady point of light, warm and small, that came on not long after full dark and went out sometime before dawn. There were no structures marked on our maps out there. No village, no road, no reason for a light.

Naturally we did not like it. An unexplained light in that kind of place makes everybody twitchy. We reported it up. We watched it through everything we had. We logged the times it came on and went off, looking for a pattern, a signal, anything. For a few nights the working theory was that somebody was watching us, timing us, and the light was part of it. That theory does not help you sleep.

But the pattern that emerged was strangely gentle. The light came on around the same time every evening. It never moved. It never blinked in any code we could find. It just glowed there, steady and patient, and then went out in the small hours. Week after week. It became part of the landscape. Guys coming up to relieve me would ask, is the hill light on, the way you might ask if it was raining.

I got attached to it, which sounds insane. Alone at three in the morning at the edge of the known world, that little warm point of light on the far hill started to feel less like a threat and more like company. Somebody out there was awake too. Somebody out there also had a light on in the dark.

We finally got the answer the way you get most answers downrange, slowly and secondhand. Through the people who moved between the valley and the world, we learned that there was a single old dwelling on that hill, older than anything on our maps, home to one elderly man who had lived there his entire life and refused every suggestion that he move somewhere easier. He kept an oil lamp burning in his window every night. Had done it for decades. When we asked why, the answer that came back has stayed with me ever since.
