I do not know what I believe about most things, but I know what I saw, and I have stopped trying to explain it to people who need everything to have a tidy reason. Some things just sit with you, quiet and strange, for the rest of your life.

My grandmother raised me for a good part of my childhood, and when I was grown I brought her cat, Sammy, to live with me after she moved into assisted living and could not keep him. Sammy was an old orange tomcat, set in his ways, deeply unimpressed by change. He had been my grandmother's shadow for fifteen years, sleeping on her lap every evening, following her from room to room. When she had to leave him, I think it broke something in both of them.

At my house Sammy adjusted the way old cats do, slowly and grudgingly. He claimed a particular armchair by my front window as his, and he slept there most of the day, and at night he slept at the foot of my bed. That was his routine for two years. Cats live and die by routine. Sammy never broke his.

Except one night.

It was a Thursday in April. Around two in the morning I woke up because Sammy was not on the bed, and I could hear a sound from the living room I had never heard him make. A low, mournful crying, on and on. I got up and went out and found him sitting in the middle of the living room floor, not in his chair, facing the front door, absolutely fixed on it, crying. I picked him up and he did not want to be held. He wriggled down and went right back to his spot on the floor, facing the door, and started again. I sat with him for a while, confused and a little unsettled, and eventually I went back to bed. He cried until the sky started to lighten. Then he stopped, and got up on his chair, and slept.

At seven that morning my mother called. My grandmother had passed away in the night at the care facility, two states away. The nurse's notes put it sometime after two in the morning.
