The house next to ours was a rental, and for one long calendar year it was rented to eight men in their mid-twenties who treated the backyard pool like a Las Vegas residency. I have nothing against young men or pools or joy. I have something against bass at a frequency that makes my picture frames walk themselves off the wall, three nights a week, until 3 a.m.

The tenants were, individually, perfectly nice. That is the maddening thing. You would catch one of them at the mailbox and he would be a lovely, apologetic boy who called me sir and promised to keep it down, and then that same evening the sky over his backyard would turn the color of a nightclub and the sound would return like a tide. Collectively they were a force of nature. Individually they were sorry. It was like being flooded by very polite water.

The real villain was never the tenants. It was the landlord, a man named Curtis who owned the house and, we would learn, six others, and who had achieved a kind of legendary unreachability. I called Curtis. I emailed Curtis. I left messages describing decibel levels with a precision that would have impressed a sound engineer. Curtis did not call back. Curtis, as far as the phone was concerned, did not exist. The rent cleared, the parties raged, and Curtis floated above it all like an absentee god who had delegated the running of the world to eight men and a Bluetooth speaker.

We tried the official channels. Noise complaints went in. Officers came, the music went low, the officers left, the music came back, a cycle so reliable you could have set a clock by it. The town could fine the tenants, but the tenants did not care, because they were young and it was summer and the fines were, to them, a cover charge.

What finally cracked it was a phone. One Saturday the party reached a scale that even the party could not contain, and something happened in that pool that ended up on the internet. I will keep it vague because there were, I later learned, some genuinely dangerous moments and at least one person who should not have been in the water. Someone filmed it. The video traveled the way videos do. And it was tagged, thoroughly, with the address, and the address led to the property records, and the property records led -- brightly, publicly, undeniably -- to Curtis.
