OFFICIAL CASE REPORT — WITNESS STATEMENT ON RECORD

The Printer Jam That Got My Boss Caught

CASE FILE #396

FILED: Jul 18, 2026

CLASSIFICATION: Instant Karma Stories

WITNESS ON RECORD: leobro

I used to work in the back office of a small distribution company that sold replacement parts to repair shops. Nothing glamorous. Fluorescent lights, burnt coffee, packing tape stuck to everyone’s sleeves, and a break room fridge that made a clicking noise like it was counting down to something.

My job was to print pick lists, match them to invoices, and hand them off to the warehouse crew before the afternoon courier pickup. It was boring work, but I was good at it. I had a system: print, highlight rush orders in yellow, clip each batch by route, and put them in the blue tray by the warehouse door.

Our operations manager, “Mark,” hated my system because he hadn’t invented it. He was the kind of guy who would move a stapler two inches and call it a process improvement. He also had a habit of blaming the nearest person whenever something went wrong.

One Thursday, something went very wrong.

A large order went out with the wrong parts. Not just one wrong box. Almost the whole shipment was mixed up. The customer was furious, the warehouse lead was red in the face, and Mark came marching into the office holding a crumpled pick list like it was evidence in a murder trial.

He slapped it on my desk and said, loud enough for everyone to hear, “This is what happens when people don’t pay attention.”

I looked at the paper. It wasn’t one of mine.

My pick lists always had the rush orders highlighted. This one had no highlighting, and it was printed on the pale gray paper we used for internal copies, not the white paper I used for warehouse batches. I told him that.

He smirked and said, “So now the paper did it?”

Everyone got quiet. I felt my face burn. I wasn’t going to cry at work, but I was close.

I said, “Check the print log. It’ll show who printed it.”

Mark’s smile disappeared for half a second, then came back. “Fine. Let’s check it.”

We had one big shared printer in the middle of the office, a chunky old thing that squealed before every job like it was protesting. Mark stomped over to it with half the office pretending not to watch. He pressed buttons too hard, muttering about accountability and standards.

The printer started spitting out the log.

Then it jammed.

Not a normal little jam, either. It made a grinding sound, flashed three lights, and displayed a message telling us to open every door it had. Mark yanked the front panel open, and a fan of half-printed sheets slid out onto the carpet.
