The Ring Came Back Through the Carrots

My mother lost her wedding band in the summer of 2003. We knew it was the garden — she gardened bare-handed, against all advice — and the whole family spent a week sieving beds with a colander. My father, who could fix anything but not that, bought her a replacement for their anniversary. The original entered family legend, the way lost things do: 'it'll turn up with the potatoes,' he used to say, and everyone would groan.

He died in 2019. My mother stayed in the house, and the vegetable patch stayed in rotation because she is not a woman who lets soil idle.

Last October my daughter, who is nine, needed to grow something for a school project, and Grandma gave her a corner of the patch. Carrots, because they are forgiving. In late spring she pulled her harvest for the class presentation — and came running in screaming in the key children reserve for wasps or miracles.
