A rooster is not supposed to happen to you in the suburbs. Dogs, yes. The occasional escaped ferret. But one Tuesday in April a rooster began crowing on our cul-de-sac at 4:50 a.m., and it kept crowing, and no one on any of the fourteen houses would admit to owning a rooster.
This is the part people who do not have chickens do not understand: a rooster does not crow at dawn. That is a lie invented by picture books. A rooster crows whenever the mood strikes, which is constantly, at volumes that seem to violate physics. Ours favored the pre-dawn hours, then took a mid-morning encore, then closed the day with a sunset set like it was doing three shows.
We formed a search party, informally, meaning we all started standing in our driveways at 5 a.m. in robes trying to triangulate the crowing by ear. It was, I will admit, the closest our street had ever been. Shared misery is a powerful bonding agent. We narrowed it to the Cavanaugh house at the end of the loop, a house we did not know much about because the Cavanaughs kept to themselves, which on a cul-de-sac is basically a confession.
Here is where I have to back up. The Cavanaughs were a young couple, Nate and Priya, married maybe three years. They were friendly in the minimal way, waved, kept a nice yard, hosted no one. And there was another man, Marcus, who lived two doors down, single, also friendly, also private. None of this seemed connected until the rooster forced us all onto the street at ungodly hours, when the walls of privacy that a normal day provides simply do not exist.
Because at 5 a.m., you see who comes and goes. And what several of us saw, over the two weeks of the Great Rooster Search, was Marcus leaving the Cavanaugh house in the dark. Not once. Repeatedly. Nate worked nights, we all knew that, and the rooster had turned his absence into a spotlight. Priya and Marcus had, it seemed, been counting on a neighborhood that slept, and the rooster had abolished sleep for everyone.
