OFFICIAL CASE REPORT — WITNESS STATEMENT ON RECORD

The Seating Plan Was a Blood-Feud Map

CASE FILE #187

FILED: Aug 14, 2026

CLASSIFICATION: Wedding Horror Stories

WITNESS ON RECORD: WestbournePorter

The couple came from two different villages, and the villages, it turned out, had History — the kind of deep, petty, generations-old rural feud that nobody under sixty fully remembers the cause of but everybody over sixty absolutely maintains. A grazing-rights dispute, a jilting, a stolen prize marrow, the origin was lost; the enmity was not. And the bride's family and the groom's family were, unknown to the happy couple who had grown up thinking their relatives were merely 'a bit much,' the two feuding clans.

The couple, city-dwellers now, oblivious to all of it, had done their seating plan the sensible modern way: mix everyone up, boy-girl, family-friend, no top-table hierarchy, encourage mingling. They had, in other words, without knowing it, taken two clans who had not been in a room together in forty years and interleaved them, alternately, elbow to elbow, at every table, like laying a fuse.

It held through the ceremony. It held through the drinks. It began to go at dinner, when an elderly great-aunt of the bride found herself seated beside an elderly great-uncle of the groom, recognised him, and said something about a marrow. It went fully, spectacularly, at the speeches, when a toast to 'both our wonderful families coming together' was met from one table with a muttered remark about 'that lot' loud enough to carry, and answered from another with forty years of stored grievance uncorking all at once.
