The Smoke Detector That Watched Us Sleep

We'd booked the place for a week — a slick city apartment, superhost, glowing reviews, the kind of listing that photographs like a magazine. My unease started small and stupid: the smoke detector on the bedroom ceiling, directly above and angled toward the bed, had a pinhole in it that the smoke detector in the living room did not. I'm an anxious traveller and I hated myself a little for noticing.

I did the thing you do — I told myself I was being paranoid, googled 'do smoke detectors have holes,' got reassured, moved on. But my eye kept going back to it, night after night, that one dark pinhole above the bed, and on the third night I couldn't stand it. I waited until my partner was asleep, stood on the bed with my phone torch, and looked.

The torchlight caught a glint. A circle of glass where a smoke detector has no business having glass. A lens, small and deliberate, seated in a drilled hole, pointed down at the pillows. And behind the detector's casing when I eased it open with shaking hands — because at that point I needed to KNOW more than I needed to feel safe — a small circuit board that was not a smoke detector's, a slot with a microSD card in it, and a tiny indicator LED, unlit on the visible side, that had been carefully positioned to face INTO the ceiling void so a guest lying in bed would never see it blink.

I photographed everything before touching anything else — the detector in place, the lens, the board, the card in its slot, the whole assembly, wide and close, with timestamps. Then I took the SD card, and we packed in total silence at 2 a.m., and we left, and we did not stop being frightened until we were in a hotel across the city with the door bolted.
