JURY OF 241 READERS HEARD THIS CASE: 168 believed it, 39 had doubts, 34 weren't buying it.

I was driving cross-country to visit family, taking back roads to avoid a closed highway, and somewhere in the late afternoon I got thoroughly lost. My phone had no signal, which back roads sometimes do to you, so I just kept driving toward where I thought the next town should be.

I came over a hill into a small village. Stone cottages, a narrow main street, a little square with a well in the middle. It was charming in a way that made me slow down. But the longer I looked, the odder it felt. The people on the street were dressed plainly, heavy fabrics, long skirts and caps, the kind of clothing you see in old photographs. There were no cars but mine. No power lines. No signs, no shopfront brands, nothing to tell me the name of the place.

A woman drawing water from the well watched me pass with mild, unbothered curiosity, the way you would watch a strange bird. A man leading a horse touched his cap. Nobody looked at their phone, because nobody had one. I told myself it was one of those living-history villages, a heritage site, and I kept driving through, oddly reluctant to stop.
