It was almost two in the morning when I finally reached the Hotel Continental in Brescano, soaked from the rain, dead on my feet after a delayed train. The lobby was empty except for a bored clerk who barely looked up, took my name, slid a keycard across the marble, and told me room 414, fourth floor, elevator on the left. I remember being grateful he was fast.
The elevator smelled of old cigarettes. I found 414, tapped the card, and the little light went green. I pushed the door open into a dark room, reached for the switch, and before I found it a voice said, loudly, in a language I did not know, and then a lamp clicked on and there was a man sitting up in the bed. My bed. Room 414. He was middle aged, bare chested, absolutely furious, and reaching for something on the nightstand.
I did the only thing my body knew how to do, which was to make a sound like a kettle and stumble backward into the corridor, letting the heavy door slam. My heart was going so hard I could feel it in my teeth. For one horrible second I thought I had walked into the wrong hotel entirely, that I was the intruder. But no. The card was for 414. The clerk had said 414. I had a photo of the little paper sleeve on my phone. 414.
I went down to the lobby shaking and the clerk had the nerve to look annoyed at me. It took ten minutes of me nearly shouting before he checked his screen and went pale. The room had been double booked. The other guest had checked in that afternoon under a booking the system had not synced, and the night clerk had simply reassigned it to me without looking. He had handed me a live key to an occupied room in the middle of the night. If that man had been the type to hit first and ask questions later, I do not want to think about it.
