They Fired Me Over a Sandwich I Never Even Ate

I want to be clear about the scale of what happened here, because when I tell people they laugh, and then they stop laughing when they realize I am not. I lost a job I was good at, a job I had held for eleven years, over a sandwich. Not even a nice sandwich. A gas station turkey club that belonged to a regional manager named Doug.

Here is the sequence of events as I understand it. Doug bought a sandwich. Doug put the sandwich in the fourth floor fridge with his name on it in a way that suggested he had been burned before. At some point between 11:40 and 1:15, the sandwich left this world. Doug was extremely upset. Doug pulled the badge logs, because our badges log every time you open the kitchen door, and mine was the last swipe before the sandwich was reported missing.

I did open that door. I opened it to refill my water bottle, which I do roughly nine hundred times a day because I am told hydration is important. I did not open the fridge. I have witnesses, sort of. Karen saw me at the sink. Karen also left before the alleged crime window closed, so Karen is not the alibi I would have designed.

The meeting was surreal. My manager, a decent man named Rob who I do not blame, slid a printout across the table like it was a murder weapon. "Your badge, 12:52." I said yes, that was me getting water. He asked if I had taken the sandwich. I said no. He asked if I was sure. I said I think I would remember eating a stranger's turkey club. He wrote something down. The fact that he wrote something down is what told me I was already gone.
