Everyone always laughs when they meet Pickle, because Pickle is a twelve-pound terrier mix with one ear that stands up and one that flops, and he looks less like a guard dog and more like a mistake. I laughed too, the first year I had him. I do not laugh about it anymore.
I am a woman who lives alone in a small house at the end of a quiet street. I adopted Pickle two years ago from a rescue that pulled him off a rural road, half starved. He weighed almost nothing when I got him. He is still a small dog, still a little ridiculous, and he sleeps at the foot of my bed under the covers because he gets cold, which is not very intimidating behavior.
The night it happened I woke up because Pickle was standing on the bed, rigid, making a sound low in his chest that I had never heard from him. Not a bark. A growl that seemed too big for his body, continuous, rising and falling. Every hair on him was up. I have never seen an animal so completely transformed. He was staring at my bedroom door, which I had left open.
Then I heard it. A footstep in my kitchen. The soft clink of someone moving through a dark room they do not know.
I want to tell you I did something brave but the truth is I froze, absolutely locked, my heart slamming, my phone across the room on the dresser. And in that frozen second Pickle launched off the bed.
I have replayed the next part so many times. This tiny dog went down the hallway toward a grown man in my house, and he did not sound tiny. He sounded like something twice his size, snarling, barking, throwing himself forward. I got to the hall in time to see a man, a real man, big, in the doorway of my kitchen, and Pickle planted between us, absolutely losing his mind, snapping at the man's ankles, darting in and out, refusing to give ground even when the man kicked at him.
