There are eleven of us — donor half-siblings, found through a testing site, scattered across three countries, bonded by a shared quarter of a genome and a shared question: who. The clinic's records were 'lost' in a fire that seems to happen to a suspicious number of these clinics. The donor was promised anonymous forever. We disagreed with forever.

Triangulation is genetic detective work, and we got good at it. Over two years we built the donor's tree backwards from the matches he didn't know he had — his cousins, his cousins' cousins, people who'd tested for heritage and unknowingly handed us the scaffolding. The tree narrowed: a region, then a town, then a family, then two brothers of the right age, then — through an obituary that named survivors, through a wedding announcement, through a LinkedIn a half-sibling shouldn't have found but did — one man. Married. Grandchildren. A quiet retired life two towns from the clinic he'd donated at as a broke student forty years earlier, having, we're fairly sure, forgotten we existed the day he cashed the cheque.

We agonized over contact. Some of us wanted a relationship; some wanted only medical history; some wanted nothing but the certainty. What we would not do is approach him with an accusation we couldn't prove, upend an old man's marriage on a strong inference. We needed confirmation, and he was never going to spit in a tube for us.
