Third week of basic was the worst week. Everybody who has been through it knows the one I mean. The newness has worn off, home feels a thousand years away, and the drill sergeants have decided you have had enough rest to start earning your misery. Morale in our bay was somewhere below the floor tiles.

That is when Private Keller found the duck.

Nobody knows where it came from. A little yellow rubber bath duck, the kind you would give a toddler, somehow smuggled into a place where we were not allowed to have so much as a stick of gum. Keller found it in the bottom of a supply bin and instead of turning it in like a reasonable person, he did the single most important thing that happened to our platoon that entire cycle. He gave it a name.

Sergeant Quackers.

By the end of the day, Sergeant Quackers had a rank structure, a backstory, and a growing legend. He had done three tours. He had opinions about our bunk-making. Somebody drew him a tiny paper campaign hat. Every night after lights out, Sergeant Quackers made his rounds, passed hand to hand down the bay in the dark, and whoever held him got to whisper one complaint about the day, which the duck would silently and wisely absorb. It was the dumbest thing in the world and it was keeping us all sane.

You can guess where this is going.

Drill Sergeant Amaya was not a person you got things past. She could smell contraband through a concrete wall. One morning she stopped mid-formation, went dead quiet, and said, in a voice that could freeze fuel, someone in this bay is hiding something yellow.

The bay went silent. Sixty hearts stopped.

She found him. Of course she found him. Sergeant Quackers was tucked into the toe of Keller's spare boot, and she pulled him out and held him up in front of the entire platoon like she was presenting evidence at a trial.
