My Coffee Mug Was Ahead of Me

Swear It Happened — CASE FILE #2

It was a Sunday morning in February. I took my blue mug from the desk in the study — I had been using it as a pen holder for a week, so it was full of pens. I dumped the pens into a drawer, carried the mug in my right hand toward the kitchen, and stopped halfway down the hall because the doorbell camera pinged. False alarm, a cat. Twenty seconds, no more.
When I got to the kitchen the mug was already there. Sitting on the counter next to the stove, handle turned left the way I always leave it. My right hand was empty. I want to be precise about the feeling: it was not surprise at first, it was a kind of wrongness in my hand, like a missed stair. I could still feel the ceramic weight that was no longer there.
And here is the part I keep coming back to: the mug on the counter was warm. Not dishwasher warm — hand warm. Exactly as warm as a mug carried from a heated study by a person with poor circulation who runs hot anyway.
I searched the hallway for the mug I was sure I had dropped. Nothing. I checked the study: the pens were in the drawer where I had just put them, so the sequence definitely began the way I remembered. One mug, one me, one impossible head start.
I made my coffee in it anyway, because what else do you do. But I sat there the whole morning with the feeling that the kitchen had finished my errand for me and was quietly waiting to see whether I would say thank you. I still use that mug daily, and I still catch myself watching it out of the corner of my eye whenever I leave the room.

The warmth detail sold me. A prankster explains everything except a hand-warm mug in an empty house. My gran called those 'helpers' and left them alone.
Best arguments that the story is Fake:
You carried it in absent-mindedly on an earlier trip and reconstructed the pen-dumping afterwards. Memory does this constantly. Sorry, the kitchen isn't hiring.

I would have poured the coffee too. Whatever finished your errand, it clearly wasn't hostile — it was efficient.
