I Answered Before It Rang

My mother and I are close, but we are not the sort of close where we talk five times a day. She raised three kids alone and she does not fuss. So it was odd, that spring, how often I found myself holding my phone in my hand a beat before it rang, already knowing it would be her.

It started small. I would be washing dishes and get the urge to dry my hands, and by the time I had, the phone was buzzing on the counter with her name. The first few times I told myself I had heard the little pre-buzz that phones sometimes make. But it kept happening, and it was only ever her. My friends could call and it would startle me. With my mother, there was always this quiet lean of the mind, this certainty, a half second early.

My husband started teasing me about it. He would hand me the phone before it rang and say, it's your mother, and half the time he was right just from watching my face change.

The night I cannot explain was a Thursday in April. I was folding laundry in the bedroom and a feeling came over me so strongly that I stopped with a shirt half folded. It was not a happy feeling. It was the feeling of my mother, but colored with worry, like walking into a room where someone has just been crying. I actually said out loud, Mom, what is wrong.

I picked up my phone. The screen was dark. I stood there holding it, and I will swear on anything you like that I said hello into a phone that had not rung yet. There was a click, a pause, and then her voice, small and wet, saying my name like a question.
