I Called My New Boss Mom in Front of the Whole Team

It was my first week at a new job, and I was trying very hard to make a good impression. My manager, a kind and sharp woman about my mother's age, had spent two days patiently walking me through everything, and I was genuinely grateful.

At the Friday all-hands, in front of the whole team of about forty people, she gave me a nice little introduction and asked if I wanted to say anything. I did. I stood up, thanked everyone for the warm welcome, thanked her specifically for all her help getting me settled, and then, because my brain runs on autopilot when I feel warm and safe, I finished with a big smile and the words, "Thanks so much, Mom."

The room went quiet, then delighted. My manager blinked. I heard my own words echo back to me and felt my soul leave my body. I tried to recover with "I mean — thank you," but it was far, far too late. Someone in the back said "aww" and it was over.
