I Interviewed for a Job and Met My Half-Sister

I moved to a new city for work and interviewed at a mid-sized firm for a role I really wanted. The hiring manager who came out to get me was a woman about my age, and the moment I saw her something went strange in my chest, though I could not say why.

Across the desk, it got stronger. She had my exact hairline, the odd little widow's peak I have always disliked. She had a nose I had seen my whole life, in the mirror and in old photos of my mother. Her hands, folded on the desk, were shaped like mine. It was distracting enough that I fumbled a question.

We got to talking, the way interviews sometimes loosen up, and she mentioned, laughing, that she had just had a birthday. She said the date. It was one day from mine, the same year. I went cold. I mentioned, carefully, that I was adopted, and had never known my birth father. She went very still, and said, quietly, that she had grown up knowing her father had a child before her, given up for adoption, whom the family never talked about.
