My daughter has a scatter of pale marks around her right ankle, three or four of them, like small fingerprints pressed into the skin and never lifted. They have been there since she was born. When she started talking she began touching them and saying, that is where the weeds held me. I did not know what weeds. She has never been near open water.
She talks about a lake. A green lake, she says, not blue, green like the bottle glass, ringed with reeds, and a wooden jetty that was warm under your feet in the afternoon. She describes it in a level of detail that unsettles me, the way the water went from warm at the top to cold underneath if you kicked down, the smell of it, the way the reeds hissed when the wind came across.
She talks about a red boat. She says she was not supposed to take it out on her own but she did, because the others had gone in for lunch and she wanted to reach the far side where the ducks were. She says she stood up in the boat, which you are never to do, and it tipped, and she went into the green water, and when she tried to kick up her feet were caught in the weeds at the bottom and the more she pulled the more they held.
She puts her hand on the marks at her ankle when she gets to that part. She says, they held me here, and I could see the light on the top of the water and I could not get to it. And then she says, and then it went quiet and warm and I stopped minding. She says it calmly. It is me who cannot breathe when she tells it.
The thing that truly stopped me was the summer. She told me once, unprompted, that it happened the summer she was seven, in the hot year when the lake was low. We had never given her a year. We had never suggested any of this was real. She simply knew, the way she knows her own birthday, that she had been seven, and that it was a hot summer, and that the lake had been lower than usual so the jetty stood up high out of the water.
