I have gone over those fifteen seconds more times than I can count, and every time I land in the same place, which is that I do not have a two-year-old anymore because I was careful. I have him because of a dog named Gus.

It was a July cookout at my sister's place. She has a pool, an old in-ground one with no fence around it, which is a thing I now have very strong opinions about. There were maybe twenty of us, adults everywhere, plates of food, that pleasant chaos of a family gathering where you assume someone is always watching the kids because there are so many adults around. That assumption is exactly how it happens.

My son Theo was two and a half and had just entered the phase where he moved like water finding a crack. One second he was by my leg. I turned to take a hamburger off the grill, said something to my brother-in-law, laughed at something. Fifteen seconds. Maybe twenty.

Gus was my old chocolate lab. He was thirteen that summer and his hips were shot. He spent most of the party lying in the shade by the back steps, getting up only to reposition himself out of the sun. He had been slowing down for two years. We had already had the quiet conversations about how much time he might have left.

I heard him before I understood anything. This bark, sharp and urgent, from a dog who barely barked anymore. I turned and my whole body went cold. Theo was at the edge of the deep end, at the very lip of it, reaching for a pool float bobbing on the surface. And Gus, my old broken-hipped lab, was already moving, faster than I had seen him move in years, hauling himself across the concrete on legs that should not have carried him.

He got there the exact moment Theo tipped forward. He grabbed the back of Theo's diaper and swim shirt in his mouth and pulled, and they both went down onto the concrete in a heap, Theo screaming from the surprise and the scraped knee, Gus half on top of him, both of them a foot from the edge instead of in the water.
