My grandmother and I were close, and I sat with her at the end, in the quiet room, holding her hand through the long last days. She drifted in and out, and mostly she was gentle and far away, but on one of the last clear evenings she gripped my hand suddenly with surprising strength and pulled me close to whisper something she said she should have told me long ago.

She said that my mother, her daughter, had never been able to have children. That it had been the great sorrow of her life. And that I had not been born to them, but chosen, taken in as a tiny baby and raised as their own, and that no one had ever meant for me to know. She said the word "chosen" over and over, as if it were the important part, as if she needed me to hear that I was wanted. And she told me, urgently, to look in the blue box on the top shelf of her closet, at home, and that it would tell me the rest.

Then she drifted off again, and she did not have another clear hour, and she passed a few days later, and I was left holding a deathbed whisper and the memory of the word "chosen."
