OFFICIAL CASE REPORT — WITNESS STATEMENT ON RECORD

The Best Man Read the Wrong Speech Off the Wrong Phone

CASE FILE #172

FILED: Jul 30, 2026

CLASSIFICATION: Wedding Horror Stories

WITNESS ON RECORD: WestbournePorter

The best man was a confident, careless man, and confidence plus carelessness is how disasters get their momentum. He'd written his speech on his phone, as everyone does now, and when the moment came he reached to the cluster of phones charging on the top table, picked one up, unlocked it — they all used the same lazy passcode, apparently, a fact that will haunt that friendship group forever — and stood up and began to read, with total assurance, off a phone that was not his.

It was the groom's phone. And the speech he'd pulled up, from an old note the groom had never deleted, was the best man's speech from the groom's FIRST wedding.

Three years earlier. A first marriage. A brief, quiet, apparently thoroughly buried first marriage that the current bride — everyone slowly, horribly realised, as the best man ploughed on — knew absolutely nothing about.

He read it with confidence for a good ninety seconds before the content caught up with him, because the opening of a best man's speech is generic — thanks, jokes, how long he's known the groom — and it was only when he reached the part with the first bride's name, and a fond anecdote about how the groom and 'she' had met, that his own voice began to falter, and he looked up, and saw the current bride's face, and saw the groom's face, and understood, in real time, in front of a hundred and fifty guests, what he was holding and what he had just read aloud.

THIS EXCERPT ENDS HERE. The remaining 191 words of the testimony — and the reader jury — are on file at:
