JURY OF 97 READERS HEARD THIS CASE: 66 believed it, 9 had doubts, 22 weren't buying it.

It's a magnificent coat — heavy charcoal wool, old-fashioned cut, the kind of thing they don't make anymore, and it was four coins on the thrift-shop rail because one button was missing. I have never regretted a purchase so beautiful so much.

The coat is warm. Genuinely, wonderfully warm, a coat you could survive a winter in. Except for one patch. Over the left breast, over the heart, roughly the size of a spread hand, the wool stays cold. Not cool — cold, ice-cold, a chill you can feel through your shirt, a cold that doesn't warm up no matter how long you wear the coat or how mild the day. I've held that patch to a radiator; it takes the heat and gives it back and returns, within a minute of leaving the radiator, to that same deep chill. Every other inch of the coat behaves like wool. That one patch behaves like it's permanently pressed against a winter window from the inside.

And when I wear it, I'm afraid.

Not of anything in my life. It's an imported fear, a fear that arrives with the coat and leaves when I take it off, and it has a very specific character: it is always the fear of being outdoors, and always at night, and always cold — a trudging, endless, exhausted, frightened cold, the fear of someone walking through a winter dark they don't expect to survive, with a specific dread located, I swear, in the chest, over the heart, exactly where the cold patch is. Wearing the coat to walk to the shops in mild spring daylight, I feel, underneath my own calm, this other person's terror of a night and a cold that aren't mine, radiating from the patch over my heart.
