My Dog Watched It Move Across The Sky And Never Barked Once

Swear It Happened — CASE FILE #310

On the night of 2 June she went out for her last wee and did not come back, and I went out in socks to find her sitting — sitting, in wet grass, which she hates — with her head up.
There was an object crossing the sky from the north. It was not high. It had no lights of its own, which is what I want you to hold on to. It was visible because it was blacker than the sky and it had an edge, and the edge went across the stars and put them out one at a time and gave them back.
It made no sound. It took, I think, ninety seconds to cross from one side of my garden's sky to the other, and it was going at the speed of a slow bus.
My dog watched it the whole way. She turned her head, tracking it, like a spectator at tennis. And she did not bark, or growl, or do the little grumble she does at cats.
When it had gone she stood up, shook herself, and went to the door and waited to be let in. And I stood in wet socks in the middle of my own lawn, thirty-eight years old, with my heart going like a washing machine.
I told two people. The first said satellite, and I said satellites do not have edges. The second said stealth aircraft, and honestly, maybe. Maybe it was some triangular thing from a base I do not know about, being tested at 200 feet over a garden in an ordinary suburb.
But here is the thing that keeps it alive for me. My dog was frightened of the bin lorry the very next morning. Absolutely normal. Full idiot.
Whatever went over us, her whole system read it as: not a threat, not prey, not food, not a cat. Nothing to say about it.
I do not know what category that is. I have never found the category. I would like to know what she knew.
