The new owners of my childhood home found me through my mother — they wanted the garden's history, which roses were whose. I had not been inside the house in twenty-six years.

Walking through it was ordinary time-travel at first: rooms smaller than memory, ceilings lower, the window latches absurdly familiar to my fingers. Then we came to the upstairs hallway and I said, without deciding to, 'You've papered over the little cupboard.'

They looked at the wall, then at me. There was no cupboard. Smooth wallpaper, an unbroken run. And here is the thing — my certainty made no sense even to me, because as I interrogated the memory it did not behave like a real one. I could not remember toys kept in it, or a door handle, or being told off near it. It was more like remembering a fact from a dream: hallway, left side, waist height, a crawl-space door, and behind it a slope of dusty boards and a biscuit tin.

The owners were renovating anyway; the husband, half teasing, tapped along the wall. One stretch, at waist height, on the left, answered hollow. Nobody said anything for a moment; the hallway got very quiet around the sound.

THIS EXCERPT ENDS HERE. The remaining 134 words of the testimony — and the reader jury — are on file at:
