The host was warm, professional, plausible — and, she stressed, entirely off-site for our stay. One throwaway line in the welcome message: 'My sister keeps the garden, she might pop by now and then, just wave hello!' Perfectly normal. Gardens need tending. We thought nothing of it.

The sister popped by every single day. At 4 p.m., give or take a few minutes, with the reliability of a tide. And she did not tend the garden. She would arrive, walk around the side of the house, and stand — for twenty minutes, half an hour — at the same spot in the garden, from which, we slowly realised, she had a direct line of sight through the large window into the living room where we spent our evenings. She didn't weed. She didn't prune. She stood, in a position that looked like gardening if you glanced but was watching if you paid attention, facing in, most days on her phone in a way that could have been texting and could have been something else held at that angle.

We waved, the first two days, because we'd been told to. She waved back with a smile that didn't reach anything. By day three we'd stopped waving and started closing the curtains at 3:45, and noticed that on the days we closed them early, she stayed longer, and moved, twice, to a different window — the kitchen, then the bedroom side — as if relocating to maintain a sightline the curtains had denied her.

That was the thing that flipped it from odd to frightening: she followed the gap. A gardener does not relocate to keep a bedroom window in view when the living room curtains close. My partner, quietly, over dinner with the curtains drawn, said the thing we'd both been circling: 'She's not gardening. She's checking on us. Like a shift.'
