Every host has a locked cupboard or owner's closet; it's normal, and 'the one locked door is just my personal storage, please ignore it' is a sentence you hear all the time and rightly don't think about. We didn't think about it. It was a door off the upstairs hallway, locked, unremarkable, and we had the rest of a lovely house to enjoy.
We ignored it for two days without effort. On the third night I couldn't sleep and went to the hall for water, and there was light coming from under the storage door. A warm, low, moving light — not the flat line of a forgotten bulb, but the shifting glow of a screen, or a lamp being moved, spilling under the door of a room full of boxes in a house where the host lived across town and no one else was supposed to be.
I stood in that hallway for a long time, telling myself timer-lights and phantom draughts and every comfort I could invent. And then, from inside the 'storage,' clear in the 2 a.m. silence, a floorboard creaked under a shifting weight. The specific, unmistakable creak of a person changing position. Then the light went off, deliberately, as if whoever was in there had seen my shadow break the light-line under the door and chosen, quietly, to go dark.
I did not knock. Every instinct I own said do not knock, and for once I listened to them. I went back to the bedroom, woke my partner, and we did the fastest, quietest pack of our lives, and we left through the front door at 2:20 a.m. with our shoes in our hands, and we did not breathe properly until the car doors were locked and the house was three streets behind us.
