I was a guest at a wedding that did not, in the end, become a marriage, and I watched the reason happen live, at the reception, into a microphone.
The maid of honor was the bride's best friend since childhood. She had seemed off all day, drinking a little too fast, laughing a beat too late. When it came time for the toasts she stood, swayed slightly, tapped her glass, and began what sounded like a normal speech about lifelong friendship. And then it turned.
She said she could not stand up here and lie. She said she had done something terrible. And then, to a room of two hundred people and a live videographer, she confessed that she and the groom had been together, three weeks before the wedding, and that she could not let her best friend marry him without knowing.
The silence was absolute. The bride set down her champagne very carefully. The groom went grey and started to stand and say something, and there was nothing to say. Someone at the back dropped a fork and it sounded like a gunshot.
