I was a newly qualified nurse doing nights on the geriatric ward, and Agnes was the small kindness that got me through the worst hours. A cleaner — older, brisk, apron, a mop bucket with a squeaky castor you could hear coming — who'd appear around 4 a.m., the flattest part of the night, and talk to me while she worked. Nothing profound. The weather. Her feet. Which patients were 'a worry tonight' — and she was always right about that, uncannily so; she'd nod at a bay and say 'keep an eye on the gentleman in six' and by morning the gentleman in six would indeed have taken a turn.

She kept me company for about two months. I assumed she was agency, or from the contracted cleaning firm, and I never thought to formalize it — you don't audit kindness at 4 a.m.

I only asked about her because I wanted to name her in a thank-you at the end of my rotation. HR had no Agnes. Not agency, not contract, not bank staff. The cleaning contractor had no Agnes on that site. The ward manager frowned and said the night cleaning on geriatrics was done by a two-man team who worked 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. and were long gone by four — no lone woman, no squeaky bucket, nobody matching.
