I have worked the third shift at the plant for nine years, and the one thing you learn on nights is the sky. You feel dawn coming before you see it; your body books it in advance.

That morning my body said dawn at half past four, which was wrong by an hour, and for once my body was not the confused one. Light came up in the east windows — the whole grey-to-rose progression, fast but orderly, maybe fifteen minutes from first pale to genuine gold on the floor. Machines look different at dawn; everything gets edges. I clocked my break at 4:50 and stood at the window with my coffee, and I was not alone: five or six of us gathered, because after years of nights an early sunrise is an event, like a wrong note from an orchestra.

Marek checked the weather app: sunrise 5:58. We joked about apps. The gold strengthened. Birds started — the full dawn chorus, unmistakable through the vent fans.
