OFFICIAL CASE REPORT — WITNESS STATEMENT ON RECORD

The Nurse Chart Recorded a Visitor We Couldn't See

CASE FILE #190

FILED: Aug 17, 2026

CLASSIFICATION: Visits From Beyond Stories

WITNESS ON RECORD: ColdChapelKate

My father spent his last week in a hospice, lucid in the mornings, drifting by evening, and from about the third day he began greeting my mother — his wife of fifty years, dead for eight — at the window of his room. Not distressed. Delighted. He'd wake, look toward the window, and his face would do the thing faces do at arrivals gates, and he'd say her name, and talk to her, easy, fond, sometimes telling us 'your mother says' this or that as though relaying a message from someone plainly in the room.

The hospice nurses were wonderful about it. They didn't correct him or medicate the visions away; they understood, better than we did, what was happening. One of them, a kind woman on the night shift, took to actually noting it on his chart — 'visitor by window, patient settled, comfortable' — half as a genuine observation of his mental state and half, I think, as a gentle courtesy to a man being visited. We found it touching. We didn't think it meant anything beyond his comfort.

The night light is the part I can't explain. His room, like all the rooms, had a low motion-activated night light near the floor by the door, so night staff could check without waking patients — it came on when someone moved into the room and went off when the room was still. Standard, sensible, everywhere.

His came on by the window. All week, on the night shift, the little light would trigger — not by the door where movement should trip it, but responding, somehow, to something by the window, at around 3 a.m., the deep part of the night. The night nurse noticed it first and mentioned it, unsettled: the light kept coming on as though someone had moved near the window, on the far side of the room from its sensor, on nights my father lay still and we, when we were there, sat still, and there was no one, visible, to trip it. Every night that week, around 3, the light by his still father's bed would wake to a movement by the window none of us could see, the same window where, by day, he greeted his wife.
