The Ring Bearer Made a Break for the Dessert Table

My sister asked my four-year-old, her son, to be the ring bearer. He practiced for a week. He understood the mission. Walk down the aisle, hold the little pillow with the rings tied to it, do not run. He nodded seriously every time, a tiny professional.

The wedding day came. The music started. The doors opened. He stepped out, pillow held high, absolutely nailing it, the whole church going soft at the sight of him. Then, halfway down the aisle, he spotted the dessert table off to the side, and on it, the cake.

He stopped. You could see the decision happen behind his eyes. Duty versus cake. Cake won by a landslide. He changed course at a dead sprint, cut across the front row, and made directly for the dessert table with the rings still tied firmly to the pillow clutched in his fist.
